3 Tips to Get the Most Out of your Moisturizer
Winter is a time of snow, cold weather, steaming mugs of hot chocolate, roaring fires, woolen socks. It’s also a time where sometimes, no matter how much skincare you apply, your skin still seems rough and dehydrated to the touch. Or your moisturizer doesn’t seem to sink in and absorb. Sound familar? We’ve rounded up 3 winter skin tips to maximize your moisturizer below!
1. Application matters
Instead of your usual application method, try gently patting your skincare in. This action increases pressure and also heat, both elements which help your skincare to absorb better. Patting is a time-honored tradition in Asia (and Korea) where many women apply each step with a gentle patting motion. While this may seem like an extra step, taking an extra minute or two to pamper your skin this way is considered an investment for the long run! Applying your skincare more liberally at night time when your body temperature is more elevated is also helpful for absorption.
2. Clear a path
A nearly universal skin problem is that with modern day aggressors such as pollution and UV exposure, skin turnaround slows down from it’s usual 28 day cycle. This means a build up of dead skin cells that accumulate over time and is often the cause of dull, tired looking skin. The accumulated build up also means that you need to regularly exfoliate so that you are ‘clearing the path’ for your treatments and moisturizers to absorb into the skin. An example of a product that could be used is the an Aqua Peeler swab that exfoliates and hydrates simultaneously to minimize irritation. (P.S Check out our past post on the Aqua Peeling trend here)
3. Choose the right ingredients
“Moisture magnet” ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, ceramides and natural alternatives to hyaluronic acid such as tremella are good places to start – these create a moisture ‘reservoir’ of sorts in the skin and anchor moisture where the skin needs it the most. For dry skin, look for thicker, more emollient creams and if you are oilier, look for lotion textures or a lightweight gel cream.
